I own this synth but I'm not a big fan of it. After hearing that great track that Alex made maybe I will give it another shot. Then again all of Alex's FM tracks are great.
If it was multitimbral I would like it a lot more. If anyone wants one I would probably sell mine for pretty cheap.
There is a lot of two operators synths I do like tho, namely the PSS 140, 170/270. But my all time favorite two operator synths gotta be the PSS 460/470 (they have OPL2 chips inside). They have programmable FM drums as well as sliders for sound editing. The 560/570 versions are also cool, but they have PCM drums. Also the PSS 380/390 are simalir, the sliders have 8-bit resolution instead of 5 which is sweet, but I dont like the way they sound as much for some reason.
It should noted that the versions with sliders dont have Midi, all the 2-ops with Midi are menu driven in some way. But one of Highly Liquid's kits could add Midi key triggering at the least. He also has them for the PSS 140 and 170/270. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/kidchemical |

I feel I should also mentioned that I opened up a PSS-680 to look into circuit bending it (never did tho), and it didnt have any recognizable FM chip. My guess is it's not a synth-on-a-chip scenerio, I think its some kind of microcontroller based DSP system.
If I remember correctly there was a Yamaha IC with a weird tag, XG or XC something. That could have been an FM chip. I saw a lot of ROM and RAM chips, and I also saw lots of switching IC's. Just thought I would throw that out there for anyone interest.
Excuse my rampant posting, this is the first day off Ive had in ahwile and I just found this message board (thanks Zinger).

I was incorrect in my other post. The PSS-680 is multitimbral, I took it out today. Not only is multitimbral, but it has dynamic voice allocation over the sixteen channels (12 voices), so you dont have to pre-specify like on the FB-01. It sounds a lot better than I remember, maybe I didnt give it fair shake. The midi implementation is pretty good. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/kidchemical |

I don't know for sure, but people says it is OPL2 (YM3812). |

If anyone is interested, here are the FM chips that I can remember in some other "toy" keyboard models I have opened to circuit bend:
PSS-170 + PSS-270 = YM2143 (the chip from master system's fm expander + NES VRC7)
PSS 460-470 = YM3812 (opl2!) The 560 and 570 also probably have this chip, if I remember correctly the only difference in these models is the drum section, the 460-470's had FM drums, The 560-570 have PCM.
SHS10 keytar = YM2414
The TG33, an FM-AWM vector hybrid, is rumored to have an OPL3 chip in it, which would make sense being that its multi-timbral and has similar voicing capabilities/restrictions.
If I remember correctly the PSS-140 had the YM2414 also, or perhaps it as the YM2420, they made a number of slight revisions to the YM2413 chip. I wonder what the differences are in these revisions? There isn't much of a way to tell because these synths of little to no editability, some models like 460-470-560-570 had a few sliders but thats about it.
It would be awesome if someone figured out a way to hack these PSS models with a PIC or arduino etc. to make them editable, maybe even use the midibox platform. I personally don't have the knowledge to do it.
